Two different jobs

Cleaning comes before sanitizing.

UMN explains that biofilms and organic material can build up on hydroponic surfaces. Its between-crop process first drains and physically washes surfaces with detergent and water, then rinses before applying an appropriate sanitizer.

A sanitizer is not a substitute for removing roots, algae, residue, and debris. A visibly clean surface is also not proof that a food-contact sanitation step has been completed correctly.

Inventory the water path

Reset every part that touched water or plants.

List reservoirs, buckets, lids, net pots, growing supports, pumps, impellers, air stones where reusable, tubing, valves, fittings, trays, tools, and splash-contact surfaces. Disassemble only as the manufacturer allows, and replace parts that cannot be inspected or cleaned adequately.

Keep cleaned components away from dirty floors, plant debris, and unclean tools during drying and reassembly. Penn State's risk-assessment approach treats storage and handling as part of sanitation, not an afterthought.

The label controls

Concentration, contact time, PPE, and rinsing are product-specific.

UMN describes bleach- and peroxide/peroxyacetic-acid-based options in its small-scale guidance, while emphasizing food-contact labeling, contact time, protective equipment, and rinse or flush directions. Those details can differ by product and concentration.

Never combine cleaning chemicals or improvise a sanitizer concentration from a generic recipe. Follow the current product label and system-material compatibility instructions. When in doubt, use qualified food-safety guidance.

  • Wear label-required PPE
  • Provide appropriate ventilation
  • Keep chemicals labeled and separated
  • Dispose of used solution under label and local rules

Between-crop means empty

Do not copy an empty-system reset into a live root zone.

UMN distinguishes between-crop sanitation from cleaning during production and cautions against bleach use around a live crop when it may not be properly rinsed. A product suitable for an empty food-contact surface is not automatically suitable around living roots.

Record the date, products, concentrations, contact time, rinse or flush step, parts replaced, and anything that remained inaccessible. The record supports repeatability; it does not justify calling the system sterile.
